BANNED AGAIN!? The Bad Luck with My Lamborghini Huracan STO CONTINUES...

- Just when I thought it was all going to plan...! It's a mandatory visit to the Nürburgring on the way to Italy with my Lamborghini Huracan STO, and that means a return to the Green Hell a year after it was banned the first time. Let's see if fortunes are slightly more on side this time around.
Our journey beings at The Shmuseum with a run over to the Eurotunnel, then through France, Belgium and into Germany. However, the primary objective of this adventure is to Rome for the start of the Lamborghini Giro, with the unfortunate news reaching us along the way that sadly it won't be going ahead due to the recent flooding and disaster that has affected the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.
Having driven the STO Shmeemobile at the Green Hell for the first time around a year ago, I've been determined to give it another go and see if it somehow squeezes under the 130dB sound limit - having only been 1dB over last time out, which resulted in a day ban. We drove it the following day without issue off camera, so hoped all would be fine on a return visit to the Ring.
As we get under way, things seem to be going to plan and it's a mega first lap before returning to the paddock. Lap two is where it all goes downhill, very quickly. After being parked up for 15 minutes, we line up to go back out for another Touristenfahrten lap, before being quickly ejected for sound limits. Unlike last time, this year there was no evidence/documentation provided as to the reason, only told that it was 131dB again, over by exactly the same count.
Long story short, if you want to drive an STO on the Ring, you need to fit some sound mufflers to the exhaust or it'll be a one lap wonder!

Even when faced with disappointment, Shmee manages to retain a smile on his face! Accepts the decision immediately, he knows he's not going to be able to change it. No histrionics... politeness, and calmness personified.

Absolutely, but you'd think by now that he would have a solution/mod for the exhaust - not the first time this has happened!
My heart goes out to the flood victims in Italy…I hope they recover quickly…I was supposed to watch the F1 Race at a party, that’s when I heard how bad the flooding was and how it cancelled the race and affected the surrounding areas.
Going through the tunnel and putting the window down to hear the exhaust was a bit silly .. exactly what I would do 😃

Most race tracks have even stricter limits. When we have track days here in Sweden it’s normally 95dB, on a good day 105dB. So 130dB is veeery liberal.
Donington usually says unrestricted when I go

It's a toll-road that is also used as a track. Noise restrictions shouldn't be unexpected.

The Nurburgring has one of the most lenient noise ordinance for any track at 130DB. Google track noise limits for all the professional tracks out there, you will find most have even lower.

Yepp. I can understand his disappointment, being kicked off the track in your un-modified/standard track car, when you have spent so much money on it isn't great. As you say exhaust turndowns or a silencer needs to be added! Sounded incredible on the Lap never the less.

On the one hand, it's smart to always have two McLarens in the garage to increase the likelihood of at least one being drivable, but when one is as blindingly expensive and impractical as the Senna... I'd try to get my hands back on the old LT coupe if I were Tim.

You are correct. Every 3dB is a doubling of power, or in this case sound pressure level.
Unlike some RUclipsrs, you are an excellent smooth driver.

It is a shame that the noise rule exists but honestly the fact that you can drive the green hell at all is amazing. You may only be able to do one lap but by god that noise is worth the ban.

Tim, is it worth getting a cap for the exhausts that deflects the exhaust down towards the road. Might stop the exhaust note from being projected out as much. Should sound the same in the car!

Last time out, we managed fine, but that was off camera.
Why don't you install an override switch to close the valves when you want to go on track. The slight decrease in HP would not be an issue and you could enjoy your track car on the track.
The car sounds amazing BTW. It would sound just as good at 125dB just not as invasive.

Drive it on vavle closed, strada, add a silencer, or adjust valves at rpm opening, or degree to which valve are like half open
go not flat out.. or brainstorm/collab with someone to get some quick-to-put-on couple db silencing solution to the tips of the exhaust! Straight up maybe not the most appealing solution, but if sound is the reason the STO cannot fly on the ring, it could imo make very much sense! :))

Shmee does the STO not have a Valve you can close to make the exhaust quieter? If not maybe you need an Akrapovic exhaust or similar?

"lives next to track" ........ "complains about noise" Was a similar case with Music venues running into trouble with local residents, complaining about noise. People buy houses knowing full well whats in the local area but then make it a personal mission to put a stop to it. I get that local residents to the ring have been there for a long time but they should know the deal that comes with the proximity. 🙃

Most race tracks have districtons, that’s why the Mercedes AMG Black Series GT isn‘t as loud as you think.
